How Often Should Airway Clearance Be Done?

Most people with CF will be asked to do airway clearance twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon or evening. Doing airway clearance regularly is important, a bit like cleaning your teeth. If you donu2019t do it every day, plaque builds up on your teeth which can lead to permanent damage. Similarly, airway clearance or chest physio needs to happen every day to prevent infection in the lungs.

Some children or adults with CF may only do airway clearance once a day when they are well and increase the number of sessions when their symptoms are worse. Some people use exercise and airway clearance together to help keep their lungs healthy.
